The realisation of the self-closing water barrier
16 August 2024
While you are enjoying the summer and perhaps a holiday, work continues at full speed in Steyl (that is how they say it there) on the realisation of the self-closing water barrier, in cooperation with skilled workers supplied by Employ Enjoy Working.
The flaps for the self-closing float barrier were made by Hollandia Infra. At the factory they were tilted and then lifted onto a truck, so they can be transported to Limburg. 🚚
The flaps are tilted and transported two at a time, spread over several days. This gives the team in Limburg enough time to receive the flaps, as they are installed in the hinge points on the construction site as soon as they arrive.
On Tuesday 30 July, the first flaps were installed by men supplied by Employ Enjoy Working. A special job, just look at these facts and figures:
- Up to and including 9 August, 12 flaps, or barrier sections, will be lifted into place
- The last 2 flaps, in the cycle path, will follow later
- The flaps weigh 11 tonnes each
- Each flap is fitted with 3 EPS floats weighing 300 kilograms each
- Each flap works with four hinges
- Together, the flaps form a barrier of 134 metres
As the Dijkzone Alliantie (Dike Zone Alliance), together with @Ploegam Hollandia Infra, we are building this unique self-closing float barrier commissioned by @Waterschap Limburg.
